Abstract

This systematic review article examines the social conflict and economic development of tourism in Peru during the political crisis resulting from the attempted coup and subsequent removal from office of former President Pedro Castillo. The political and social crisis led to significant economic losses and underscored the need to address socio-economic and political challenges to ensure the sustainability of tourism. Three approaches are identified: negative economic impact, the importance of collective action by local communities, and criticism of private interests in tourism policies. The vulnerability of the sector to instability is highlighted, along with the need for a sustainability strategy, effective government management, and citizen participation in decision-making. The importance of promoting more inclusive and equitable tourism, diversifying the tourism offer, and enhancing the state's capacity to manage conflicts are emphasized. The study proposes collaboration among businesses, local communities, and government to promote sustainable tourism and contribute to the well-being and social peace of the country.
