Abstract

The objective of the research was to evaluate the solid waste and
wastewater, from its generation to its final disposal, generated in the
first level Health Centers (I-4) in Cusco city. We determine the
characteristics of solid waste, the critical points in each stage of waste
management and we evaluate the wastewater. The techniques used
were the direct observation and interviews, to demonstrate the practices
of the staff in charge of the waste management; also, we used
laboratory observation to evaluate the wastewater, according valid
regulations. The studied was carried out in all the services of the
Belenpampa and San Geronimo Health Centers (HC), and its effluents.
The Belenpampa HC generated 30,33 kg/day of waste, including
biocontaminated (65,29%), common (33,23%) and special (1,48%).
San Geronimo HC produced 24.98 kg/day, including biocontaminated
(51,27%), common (43.4%) and special (5,33%). The critical points
in Belenpampa were the conditioning, segregation and final storage,
whereas, and in San Geronimo were the conditioning and segregation.
The wastewater parameters that exceeded the allowed limits were fats
and oils, Total coliforms, and Chemistry Oxygen Demand (COD).
We concluded that, the management of solid waste in its different stages
is inadequate, there are very poor management points and some
wastewater parameters do not meet the Maximum Permitted Limits
(MPL), therefore, wastewater has a low biodegradability.
